Advancing English for Business: Speaking

This optional, extra 10-credit course (EAS5002) for PGT students in the Adam Smith Business School focuses on learning to communicate effectively in academic discussions and job interviews. It involves selecting and discussing academic texts from your programme reading lists. You will also practise preparing and responding to common interview questions.

AEBS Speaking runs during Semester 1.

This course is designed to fit in with your main study programme so that you can have a more successful student experience at the University of Glasgow.

This course also directly contributes towards employability by developing key communication skills and inter-personal aptitudes, which are valued in all professional business contexts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • communicate effectively and appropriately in different contexts
  • respond in a structured and coherent way to specific tasks or questions
  • work autonomously in groups in order to prepare for and contribute more effectively to class discussions and tasks

Requirements of Entry

The course is open to international post-graduate taught students in the Adam Smith Business School.

Timetable & Attendance

This course takes place in the first semester. It meets for one-hour, twice a week, for ten weeks.

Please note: Due to the number of students signing up for these courses, it is essential that you attend your first class and continue to attend, or your place will be offered to another student on the waiting list.

Advancing English for Business: Writing

This optional, extra 10-credit course (EAS5003) for PGT students in the Adam Smith Business School focuses on the use of Business English in key academic and professional texts. It prepares you to write texts that you find in business, from those needed to get a job to those that you might produce in a professional role. It also supports you in applying your PGT knowledge to real-life business situations.

AEBS Writing runs during Semester 2.

It directly contributes towards employability by developing key written communication skills and inter-personal aptitudes, which are valued in all professional business contexts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • write different types of business texts with appropriate structure and style
  • use a range of business vocabulary for different contexts
  • identify and evaluate key information from business texts
  • understand how different types of business texts interrelate

This course takes place in the second semester. It meets for two hours, once a week for ten weeks.

Please note: Due to the number of students signing up for these courses, it is essential that you attend your first class and continue to attend, or your place will be offered to another student on the waiting list.

Assessment

Two practical skills assessment tasks, one at the end of each week 5 part of the course. You will complete a task resulting in a written text of a specific business genre. The first will be weighted at 40%, the second at 60%.

Minimum Requirement for Progression or Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course’s summative assessment.

Q: How do I enrol for these courses?

A: Enrol directly using MyCampus. Please choose a class option that fits with your main course timetable. If you have any issues enrolling, please contact:

You must include your programme of study in your enquiry email, for example, Management Generalist, Accounting, Economics, Management Specialist, etc.

You can only take the Speaking course in Semester 1 and the Writing course in Semester 2.

 

Q: Will my AEBS (Writing and/or Speaking) grade affect my overall degree (your Masters)?

A: No: The results from these courses will not affect your degree in any way. Advancing English is an additional 10-credit course and not part of your 180-credit major Programme Structure within the Adam Smith Business School. 

While the grade of this course will not affect your overall degree, please note that your grade will be visible on your transcripts.

 

Q: What happens if I drop this course?

A: We understand that taking additional courses can be demanding, so to drop this course contact:

PLEASE NOTE: if you drop either of the courses, you must do so before submitting or completing any of the summative assessed tasks, as you will not be able to drop after this. If you are not sure what the summative assessed tasks are, ask your tutor. If you stop coming, without Good Cause, you will receive a CR (Credit Refused) grade on your transcript.

 

Q: Can I change to audit rather than drop the course?

A: If you prefer to audit the course, rather than drop it, you can continue in your group, but you must change to audit before completing any summative assessments.

PLEASE NOTE: if you audit you will not be graded for any assessed tasks, but you will be expected to contribute as well as attend at least 70 % of the course. If you change to audit but do not attend, you will receive a CW (Credit Withheld) grade on your transcript.
